Home Sweet Home
For months, we have been planning to go on a vacation over Memorial Day. It would be the first time we had ever been away from home since Dallin joined our family. The Mays, Jason’s sister and our brother-in-law have a cabin down in Duck creek, which is up the canyon from Cedar City. We were planning on spending the weekend with Jason’s family. There are 11 of us (soon to be 12). We left Friday morning. Gone are the days when Jas and I could each pack a duffle bag, hop in the car and be on our way. When you have a kid, I have learned that you need to pack half of the house. Oh boy.
Dallin was good for about the first 2 hours. He then decided that he had had enough of his car seat and screamed for the next 45 minutes. When we got to Cedar City, we had some time to burn so we walked around this really awesome furniture store. Good thing I don’t live in Cedar City, otherwise the piggy bank would be empty. I wanted practically everything in there. It’s just as well. We don’t have any more room for additional furniture.
When we got up to the cabin, we set up camp. As soon as we got situated, Dallin was fussy for the duration of the weekend. We were lucky if he didn’t cry for ten minutes. The longest nap he took was 30 minutes for the entire time we were there. We packed a porta-crib for Dallin to sleep in, but the floor was so cold at night, that we let him sleep with us, which needless to say affected our sleep patterns as well. I felt so bad for my in-laws. They must have nerves of steel to have tolerated all the crying. They probably now think that we have a demon child. But with all his crying, we still adore and love him more than anything in the world.
The cabin trip was still a blast though. We played lots of games. Jason had fun playing Risk. We went four wheeling, Chris and Tiffany braved the wind and went fishing. We had lots of good food. And we even went hiking. Dallin liked walking around in the trees and getting a little sun. Thanks Chris and Tiff for letting us use your cabin.
On our way back up north on Monday, we met my dad, stepmom, and stepbrother in Cedar City. We had lunch at the always yummy Cafe Rio. For my birthday, my dad gave me a Thomas the Train book that recorded his voice telling the story. Dallin loves it. He pats the pictures and loves turning the pages to hear the music and grandpa Brad's voice. It reminds me of when my dad used to read me goodnight stories where he would change the words (for example: have Goldie Locks get eaten by the three bears). Thanks dad!
Dallin slept for the majority of the way home (thank goodness). As soon as we got back to our house, Dallin had a huge smile on his face and you could just feel that he was so so so happy to be back. He has returned to his jolly old self and we are so thankful. It takes your kid being a monster on rare occasions to realize how incredibly awesome he is most of the time.
I’m so grateful for our families. I’m so grateful to be mother, and wife. I’m so grateful for a home to come back to. And I’m so thankful that my son is a happy boy again.
(Sorry for lack of pictures. We packed our camera, but somehow managed to not take one single picture all weekend. Shame on us.)
